福岡で結成された miu mauは、シンセ／ヴォーカル、ギター、ドラムによるアートポップ・トリオ。 ニューウェイヴやポストパンクの要素を感じさせる洗練されたポップサウンドに、Stereolab、Broadcast、Buffalo Daughterといったインディ／アヴァン・ポップの系譜も織り交ぜながら、独自の音楽世界を構築してきた彼女たち。新作カセットEP 『Motif21』 は、2017年のアルバム『Drawing』以来となる久々のフィジカル作品となる。
複雑なリズム、炸裂するギターやハモンドオルガンのフレーズはソリッド感も増して豊かに響くタイトル曲「Motif 21」（2025年ストリーミングで発表）に加え、変容を繰り返しながら完全リモートにより制作された新曲「Furidashi」を収録。B面にはロンドンを拠点に活動するThe Leaf Library/Roland Pragueによる「Furidashi」のリミックス2曲を収録し、同楽曲の持つニューウェイヴ・ポップ的側面と、ドリーミーでシューゲイズ的な側面という、対照的な2つの表情を鮮やかに引き出している。
With their roots in the western Japan city of Fukuoka, miu mau are an art pop trio featuring synth, vocals, guitar, and drums.
The trio create a unique musical world, weaving a sophisticated pop sound containing elements of new wave and post-punk, with indie/avant-pop influences that recall Stereolab, Broadcast, and Buffalo Daughter. Their new cassette EP Motif21 marks their first physical release since 2017's Drawing.
In addition to the title track with its complex rhythms, explosive guitar, and Hammond organ phrases adding solidity and richness, the EP also includes the new song Furidashi, which was constructed and produced remotely by the members from their current homes in Fukuoka, Takamatsu and Tokyo, and continues the group's evolution. The B-side features two remixes of "Furidashi" by The Leaf Library/Roland Prague (both the work of multifaceted London-based musician Matt Ashton), vividly showcasing the song's two contrasting aspects: its new wave pop side and its dreamy, shoegaze-like side.
